14 “Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God;[a] believe also in me. 2 In my Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?[b] 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. 4 And you know the way to where I am going.”[c] 5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” 6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you had known me, you would have known my Father also.[d] From now on you do know him and have seen him.”
8 Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” 9 Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works. 11 Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else believe on account of the works themselves.
12 “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father. 13 Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask me[e] anything in my name, I will do it.

The original Greek word is ‘paraclete’
Jesus has promised to send us ‘Bohesa’ (the Counselor in English translation), who will dwell within us and live with us. (John 14:16-17) The word ‘Bohesa’ is a word formed in Chinese characters, which is found only in the Bible and it means an intercessor of mercy. Its equivalent in Greek is ‘Parakletos’, a legal terminology meaning an intercessor, or a spokesperson.

보살피며 은혜를 베푸시는 분. 즉, 신자들을 강하게 하고 그들을 진리 가운데로 인도하는 하나님의 영 곧 성령을 가리키기 위해 사용된 이름. '위로자'(Comforter), '중보자'(Mediator), '탄원자'(Supplicator), '돕는 자'(Helper), '상담자'(Counselor)란 의미로 사용되며, 이는 주로 '성령 하나님'(요14:16,26; 15:26; 16:7)을 가리킨다. 성경에는 '예수 그리스도'에게도 이 용어가 한 번 적용되었다(요일2:1).

보혜사(保惠師, 그리스어: παράκλητος parakletos 파라클레토스[*], 라틴어: paracletus 파라클레투스[*], 영어: paraclete)의 한자어 음역이다, 따라서 보호하시고 은혜주시는 스승이라는 해석은 옳지 않다
〈요한복음〉 14장 16~17절에서 예수는 보혜사가 곧 진리의 영(그리스어: πνευμα της αληθεια pneuma tes aletheia 프네우마 테스 알레테이아[*], 영어: Spirit of truth)이라고 말하고 있다. 기독교에서는 진리의 영이 성령(Holy Spirit)과 동일하다고 본다.
그리스어 파라클레토스는 여러 가지 의미를 가지고 있기 때문에, 성경 번역판마다 사용하고 있는 용어에 다소 차이가 있다. 예를 들어, 한글성경의 개역한글판과 표준새번역판에서는 보혜사로 번역하고 있으며, 공동번역판에서는 협조자로, 가톨릭성경판에서는 보호자로 번역하고 있다. 영문성경의 킹제임스판과 YLT에서는 Comforter ("위로자")로, NIV에서는 Counselor ("상담자" 또는 "고문")로, NASB에서는 Helper ("돕는 자")로 번역하고 있다.
