New York Times에 한국 국회에서의 폭력사태 기사가 실렸다. 기사 원문은 'Violent clashes in the South Korean parliament, called the National Assembly, are not unheard of, reflecting the nation's feisty brand of democracy'이다. 'the nation's feisty brand of democracy'라는 표현이 또다른 논란을 야기하고 있다. 국내 일부 언론에서는 기다렸다는 듯이 이 부분을 '똥개(?) 같은 한국 민주주의'라고 번역해 놓고 한미무역협정(FTA)안 상정을 반대한 야당을 '똥개'로 둔갑시키는 기민함을 보였다. 정말 그럴까? 영어권 원어민들이 사용하는 영영사전에는 'touchy; quarrelsome; spunky'(싸움질 잘하는, 성마른)으로 나온다. 가장 권위있다는 Merriam-Webster사전에서는 feisty를 'full of energy, quarrelsome, frisky, aggressive, spunky'로 설명하고 있다.' champion is faced with a feisty challenger' 같은 예문은 그 챔피언은 덤비는 도전 선수와 맞붙게 되었다는 뜻이다. 즉 feisty는 '덤비는, 잘 싸우는, 성미 급한'의 공통 의미로 쓰일 뿐 결코 잡종 강아지라는 의미로 사용하는 용례는 거의 없는 셈이다.따라서 'feisty management'는 '공격적인 경영진'이고 'feisty swimwear'는 '과감한 수영복'이 된다. 라는 책 제목은 잡종 강아지 같은 여성이라는 뜻이 아니라 '용기 있고 당돌한 여성'을 강조하는 말이다.
흔히 사람이 멍청하다고 할 때에 가장 심한 순서대로 적는다면 idiot > imbecile > moron 순서다. "You idiot!"라고 말하면 가장 모멸적인 욕이지만 "You moron"이라고 말하면 '어리버리한 수준'을 말할 뿐 그리 심한 욕이 아니다. 그래서 표현의 의미 차이는 매우 중요하다. ignorant는 배우지 못해서 무식한 것이되 지능이 낮다는 뜻은 아니지만, stupid는 천성적으로 멍청한 것이라는 뜻으로 모욕적인 표현이다. 언론인이 영어 어휘의 근본 개념까지 바꿔가며 자의적 해석을 덧붙이는 것은 무지의 표출일 뿐이다.

특히, feisty brand of democracy를
어떻게 "잡종강아지와 같은 파괴적인 민주주의"라고 하는 지 모르겠다. 이는 의도적으로 비하 왜곡의 한 모습이다.
feisty 는 full of nervous energy / having or showing nervous a lively ageression
의 의미다. 나쁘게 보면 "성마른"이고 좋게 보면 "전투적이다.
feisty brand of democracy 는 좋게 해석하면, (독재에 항거한) 전투적인 민주주의의 한 형태
나쁘게 말하면 (항상)대립해서 싸우는 민주주의의 형태 라고 할 수 있다.
아무리 나쁘게 해석해도 조갑제가 말하는 " 잡종강아지와 같은"은 없다.
말꼬리 잡는다고 할 수도 있겠지만,
나름대로 최선을 다한 한국민주주의를
"잡종강아지와 같은" 같이 자의적 왜곡하는 것은 용서할 수 없다.
보수언론매체들이 외국기사를 변형, 왜곡, 자의적해석해 온 것은 어제 오늘의 일이 아니다.
조갑제가 얼마나 영어를 잘하는지는 몰라도
지금 이나라 국민들은 당신 수준의 꼴통이 아니다.
한국민주주의가 "잡종강아지"가 아니라,
당신이야 말로 잡종강아지가 아닌지 자문해보라.

방금 미국의 권위紙 뉴욕 타임스 인터넷판으로 들어갔더니 1면 머리 사진이 충격적이다. 넥타이를 맨 사람이 망치를 쳐들고 무엇을 부수는 장면이다. 이 사진과 기사는 어제 한국 국회에서 민주당원들이 韓美자유무역협정(FTA) 비준동의안 상정을 저지하기 위하여 벌인 폭력사태를 보도하고 있었다. 지난 여름 민주당이 참여했던 촛불亂動 사태 이후 처음으로 한국을 망신시키는 사진이 1면 톱으로 올랐다. 이 기사는 지적하지 않았지만 진짜 나라 망신은 민주당의 前身인 열린당 정권이 韓美FTA를 만들었다는 점이다. 그들이 전기톱과 망치로 부수고 있는 것은 바로 자신의 얼굴이다. 민주당은 지금 집권 가능성을 부수고 있는 것이다. 민주당은 지금 한국의 국가적 이미지를 부수고 있는 것이다. 민주당은 지금 한국의 어린 민주주의를 부수고 있는 것이다.
뉴욕타임스는 <한국 국회에서 폭력적 충돌은 처음이 아니다. 이는 한국의 잡종강아지 같이 파괴적인 민주주의를 표상하고 있다/Violent clashes in the South Korean parliament, called the National Assembly, are not unheard of, reflecting the nation’s feisty brand of democracy.>고 썼다. 한국인들이 아무리 잘 속지만 이런 정당에 정권을 주지는 않을 것이다. 국민들은 '잡종강아지 같은'(feisty) 이란 말을 한국의 민주주의에 덮어쒸운 민주당, 그리고 '깡패'라고 자칭한 민노당에 대해서 自虐賞이라도 주어야겠다.
이런 생리의 야당을 상대로 하여 '한강의 기적'을 만들어간 李承晩, 朴正熙를 필두로 하는 한국의 진정한 민주주의 건설세력에 경의를 표한다.

TOKYO — The parliamentary battle over a contentious free trade deal in South Korea led to a confrontation on Thursday in which opposition lawmakers used a sledgehammer to knock down the doors of a blockaded room where a committee was discussing the agreement.

Members of the opposition party were sprayed with fire extinguishers from inside as they tried to enter a parliamentary committee room.
Television reports showed fire extinguishers being sprayed at the opposition lawmakers who were trying to get into the room. At least one person was shown bleeding from the face.
The members of the opposition Democratic Party were trying to stop the trade agreement with the United States from advancing to the floor of South Korea’s legislature, the National Assembly, for a final vote. The governing party has been seeking to ratify the trade pact by the year’s end, saying it would improve South Korea’s competitiveness and ties with the United States. Opponents say it will hurt South Korean farmers.
Violent clashes in the National Assembly are not unheard of, reflecting the nation’s feisty brand of democracy. The trade agreement with the United States has been a particularly thorny issue, after huge demonstrations in Seoul, the capital, this year against the import of American beef.
Thursday’s assault came after the opposition party had threatened to block the deal by force if necessary. Fearing an attack, members of the foreign affairs committee, under the control of the governing Grand National Party, had barricaded themselves inside the room as they met.
Security guards and aides from the governing party stood outside the barricaded doors, where scuffles broke out when a dozen opposition lawmakers showed up. The opposition lawmakers then used at least one sledgehammer and crowbars to tear through the doors, only to be thwarted by piles of furniture thrown up as a second line of defense.
The mayhem failed to prevent the pact from being formally introduced to the committee, a step in the process of bringing it to a full parliamentary vote.
The deal to lower tariffs and other trade barriers was signed last year by negotiators from South Korea and the United States but cannot take effect until ratified by lawmakers in both nations.
The pact faces stiff opposition in the United States Congress, where many lawmakers say they fear it could put struggling American automakers at a disadvantage.
